Ready, Set, Go - Shoe lover's guide to a day at the races

Monday 4 November 2013

With the spring racing carnival in full swing, check out my list of 'things' to ensure you have a great day at the races.

There are high stakes at every high profile race meet throughout the carnival, and I don't just mean for the horses! Last year the winner of the Myer Fashions on The Field took home a $90k lexus amongst other things, check out my post here from last year. The competition is very serious, and you need to register weeks in advance to compete, so don't feel like you can just rock up to the races in spring carnival and be asked to walk for Myer Fashions on the Field. Now that you know this, you may as well just wear trackies and thongs? hehehe

My preference for race wear is always comfort, and this does not mean heinous hospital worker shoes (sorry nurses' I do love you xoxox) or hessian sack dresses. There are classy shoes with adequate height available for long days of standing in the grass and numerous dresses out there that tick all my boxes.

I wore the fluro pink wedges in the below pic to my last day of standing at the races, it was at NSW's Derby Day (which is traditionally black and white) to see Black Caviar. They are a modest heel so still gave me twoish inches without taking the comfort away. Check out the dress I wore here.

Below is my survival list for the races;

  1. 1. Wear the shoes you are able to stand in the best, before you down 6 plastic cups of house champagne and hopefully you can stand in them afterwards the champas as well.
  2. 2. If you know your feet will hurt, take some flats to kick around in after you have had enough (which you know you inevitably will). If you do not bring your own, you could be lucky and have these available for sale, but do not count on it!
  3. 3. Don't be a skank and wear a super short dress, keep this for a night out on the town. If you want to sit down later in the day a longer dress that isn't tight is recommended.
  4. 4. If your fascinator is not a sombrero, remember sunscreen ladies, you do not want to risk prematurely aging your skin for an entire day especially on your face, if you don't want the lingering smell of sunscreen all day, at least opt for a foundation or moisturiser that has a sunscreen element like Napoleon Perdis' BBB Cream (link here).
  5. 5. Take a poncho, not just for rain, but if you turn up and there are no seats or tables left, an emergency poncho split down the side can be used as a makeshift picnic rug, your friends will be eternally grateful.
  6. 6. If you are braving stilettos instead of a wedge or flat, be sure to look up Starlettos http://au.starlettos.com/ they will stop your heel sinking in the grass.
  7. 7. Don't bother studying the form (this is the statistics of the previous races and horses) there are people that pretty much devote their life to this, and if they can't get it right, your guess is as good as their's. I created a way to pick the winners, I base my decision on the colour of the horse and the colour of the jockey's silks.
  8. 8. Find a bag that is easy to carry but most importantly easy to close with all the items you want to take, no point worrying about it bursting open every time you handle it.
  9. 9. Finally, take an emergency purse for the essentials which should include;
    • Paracetamol - for the long day in the sun drinking champas.
    • Bobby pins - in case you want to strategically pull your hair off your face or to schettttle down the rogue pieces.
    • Party feet - see previous blog post here.
    • PaPaw cream - for the lips and potential ant bites.
    • Anti histamine - in case you get a grass allergy.
    • Safety Pins - in case of a wardrobe emergency.
    • BandAids - for the blisters if you haven't had a chance to wear your shoes in.

10. HAVE FUN! Just take everything that happens on the day in your stride, ie skirt blowing up at the drink counter, losing more money than you wanted to or meeting the man of your dreams and realising he is is better dressed than you haha.

What did I forget on my list? What is in your races survival plan?

It is my birthday - AGAIN!

Tuesday 15 October 2013
Wow, a full year has passed since this post I cannot believe how fast the time has flown.

In keeping with tradition, this year I am wearing one pink and one purple stiletto, and my trusty birthday badge. What do you think?

Oh and check out the awesome cake from the girls at work? Does that semi decent face look familiar hehehe

eBay - Endless Items & Eternal Bargains

Friday 6 September 2013
eBay is close to 20 years old, and has had many many additions in that period of time. I remember my first eBay encounter, assisting my mum with a purchase of a "Silver trinket box" it took around 2 weeks to arrive, was almost the size of a shoe box, clearly only silver in colour not material and broken hahahaha mum unwrapped it and chucked it straight in the bin.
I then had a crack myself in the days before PayPal and I bought a Lord of The Rings bookmark from USA (accidentally), it cost me $2 USD, but a further $10 to post a money order there to pay for it hahahaha.

Then another disaster when my mum was trying to put a bid in of $100.00 but typed $100,00 which changed to be $100,000 hahahaha.

Even though I have had my fair share of fails on eBay, I have also had some great great finds. With much easier search fields, "Buy it Now" and "Best Offer" listings and the ability to limit to Australian based items only, it really is a fun and easy place to shop.

Check out these babies - new in the box, still with the tissue paper, spare heel caps and zero marks on the sole. Guess?! (hehe geddit?) how much they were, knowing retail they are $169.95!

A. $100 + $12 postage
B. $50 + $12 postage
C. $25 + $12 postage
D. $10 + $12 postage

The answer is "D" can you believe it was more to post them than to actually buy them?

Although I have had a few eBay disasters, I am sure the bargains fair outweigh the fails.

Feel like walking on a cloud?

Wednesday 21 August 2013

You would all be familiar with "Shoe Me Gorgeous" I have featured the shoe heaven in two previous posts here and here and shared links to sales and other posts on my Facebook page.

After seeing Shoe Me Gorgeous post about "Ramarim - Total Comfort" shoes a few times I knew I needed to have a pair to see what all the fuss was about. Mainly because I have been an avid heel wearer for years and wanted to test "the most comfortable shoes ever", although I trust Jess the owner operator of Shoe Me Gorgeous I just HAD to try them for myself :)

Again, only waiting a one day delivery turn around, my Ramarim's arrived at the office at lunchtime - perfect.

After excitedly unwrapping the beautifully presented box, with pink tissue paper, there they were <insert crazy high pitched squeal here>.

I wrapped them on my feet and went for a strut lap around the office, I finally understood what it meant to have a pair, they are the MOST COMFORTABLE HIGH HEELS I HAVE EVER WORN!!! I expected to think "Well they are comfy, but everyone needs to settle down". They are amazing.

There are three of us in the office that have size 6-7 feet and the other two ladies (19 and 40+) were lucky enough to also know how it felt to walk with a shoe embracing their foot with each cushioned step. There were exclamations of "Oh My" and "What? I didn't believe you when you were going on about how comfy they were".

Check out the "hugging" protector around the heel,

the few millimeter thick padded insole pillow, a bed for the ball of your foot,

and the stylish rubbery out-sole that adds to the spring in each step!

Now I know why the brand has 1.1million likes on Facebook :)

After owning 100s of pairs of heels over the past 10 years (I always keep a healthy level of around 150 pairs but constantly rotate and giveaway to friends, family & charities), I can safely say that these are hands down the most comfortable heels I have walked in.

Please check out Shoe Me Gorgeous for all your Ramarim requirements, do not bother heading to Ramarim's website directly, navigating a mostly Portuguese website is difficult.

Too busy to go shopping?

Wednesday 14 August 2013
The following has occurred in my life in the past few weeks:
My lovely boyfriend and I purchased a house together (It failed to settle due to the seller's issues, it resulted in a nervous / stressful 10 day wait for us!)
Sold my little starter home
Started a new business
Lost 18.2kgs - so close to my next 20kg goal. Check out when I started my weight loss journey here.
The list really does go on!!!

With so much going on, we turned to online shopping for everything from groceries to home appliances and of course SHOES!!!!

My most recent shoe purchases came from Novo Shoes and Fiebiger Shoes.

You would all have heard of Novo Shoes, they have a store in just about every major shopping center in Australia and New Zealand. However, Fiebiger shoes you may not know much about, here is a quick spiel from their website

"Fiebiger Shoes is an Australian designed footwear label with an emphasis on colour, style and quality. Established in 2009 by two shoe addicted sisters who wanted to design a range that reflected their love of colour, it has now evolved into a brand that is available in stores worldwide."

This seems like a brand that I can happily support hehe! Do you think you could too?

I am now the proud owner of the below pairs of shoes, what do you think?

Please check out their website here and their Facebook page here. I promise you will be impressed!

Grace xo

PS all I need now is a home pedicurist and I will never need to go to a shopping center again!

The online shoe shopping flame has been reignited

Thursday 27 June 2013
Whilst I have been recovering from my Skankle Ankle surgery for the past 8 weeks, I have really gone off buying shoes :(

To get me back in the shoe admiring and buying arena, I decided to revisit Shoe me Gorgeous (featured in a previous blog here). Never a doubt in my mind that this shoe admirer wouldn't be able to get me back on the wagon, and now that I have lost 17kgs it was going to be easier hehehe.

After a quick peruse, I ended up with two pairs of shoes, and two days later they were on my hot little feet (beautifully packaged yet again with shoe shaped confetti and tissue paper).

This re-dabble in online shoe shopping, introduced me to a Brazilian brand called Vizzano and after trying to negotiate their Portuguese website on an IPad it made me thankful that places like Shoe Me Gorgeous are opening up the world to Australian shoe lovers. The shoes are a stunning peacock blue colour with a platform on the front, which to my delight has an extra piece so the platform isn't a round edge, only once my ankle is recovered 100% would I attempt a rounded platform. There are pics below, what do you think of the colour and style of the platform, do you all understand what I mean about a 'rounded' platform?
Despite the height and my nervous ankle, they are possibly one of the most comfy pairs of platform stilettos I have worn.
It is apparent to me that Brazilians know much more than just feathers and shaking their booty, and for my boyfriends pleasure / amusement I tested the heels in a bootylicious booty shaking dance that I have seen in many of pitbull's film clips - I think I was Beyonce in a previous life haha.

Check out the other hot heels I received - they are stunning and got rave reviews when I wore them to the dentist yesterday hehe.

Be sure to keep your eye on Shoe Me Gorgeous' facebook page and website, there is a new shipment of Vizzano shoes heading down under in a few weeks :D

Driving in Heels - Yes or No?

Thursday 20 June 2013
Bonjour readers!

Who has seen this Ford Fiesta TV advertisement?

When I first saw it I was pleased but it also annoyed me, and I will tell you why.

Likes
I really love when marketing teams use high heels, shoes etc in their campaigns, it genuinely brings a smile to my face.
I think zebra print is hot.
Basing an entire car advertisement on a shoe compartment, not one mention of engine specs or the inside space - unreal!

Dislikes
At 3 seconds, the female says "Hot heeled wedges" the shoes she is holding are clearly platform stilettos.
At 17 seconds, the female says "Pink runners", they are black with vermillion laces.
At 18 seconds, a further mention of wedges!

It made me think, how many people actually cannot drive in heels? or just prefer flats? It is more likely for me to stall my car when I am wearing flats vs heels. Is anyone else the same?

Let me know your thoughts!

Spending savings time :)

Friday 17 May 2013
Gosh I have been slack posting lately!

A quick ankle update for those that are interested - you all should know by now the multiple ankle issues I have had, if not check them out here :)
I had the scar tissue that attached itself to the left, right and front side of my ankle joint surgically removed on the 1st of May. The surgeon was very happy with the procedure and removed my stitches on Wednesday (Pic below), which resulted in me embarrassingly fainting on the bed hahahaha.
I have also recommenced physio with Benny and he was very pleased with how the joint was moving.
The sad part is I am out of high heels for at least another 6 weeks :(. But that is a small price to pay to keep your ankle  operating smoothly for another 60 years!!

So, you may recall in November I let you all in on my savings secret, it has now been 12 months since I opened the special savings account and I have just under $2,000 in it! Hooooooooraaaaaaaaaaay, I think I will use that to put towards our cocktail fund on our NYE cruise later this year hehehe.

Do any of you have a great way to save money that you feel like sharing? Post it on my facebook wall www.facebook.com/thepinkplatformstiletto

Black Caviar & Class at the Races

Tuesday 16 April 2013
You may recall my numerous posts during the Spring racing carnival last year - check them out here, here and here. It is no secret that I am a fan of the races, I love getting frocked up and having a great time betting on the grey horses, pink jockeys and meaningful names! Thankfully my boyfriend is a fan too and he organised tickets Royal Randwick's Derby Day before they were sold out. Didn't we look loverrrrly waiting for Miss Black Caviar?

Being on my healthy lifestyle plan, getting crunk on champers sitting in the sun was out of the question, so instead I people watched during the breaks between races and judged (good and bad) all attendees that entered my field of vision. A little harsh I suppose, but I assume I was judged when I went to grab water and my dress had a Marilyn Monroe moment at the bar :( hahaha fairly embarrassing, but I just apologised to all that saw my granny undies and headed back to be a judgmental skanko.

Continuing with my observations I spotted this ---->

Flipsters!!! I have not had the pleasure of buying a pair as I always take foldable flats I purchased from Novo many moons ago when wearing heels.  But on this day in particular I wore some sensible wedges seen here.
Flipsters look like comfy nifty little shoes in a cute little bag, they come in ballet flats and thongs in a range of colours. The brand was created in Australia and now is sold around the world!

Be sure to check them out before your next massive night out or race day :)

A royal slip up? Puuhlease we have all done this!

Monday 25 March 2013
Waking up with the Today show has it's perks some days. A few days ago they reported that Kate Middleton Duchess of Cambridge had slipped up royally, I expected her to have dropped an F Bomb or something by the way they were talking it up, I eagerly awaited the footage, and all they were referring to was Kate getting her stiletto heel caught in a grate.

Splash News

It really made me laugh, this has happened so many times to me that I couldn't believe it made worldwide news headlines. No one cares when I do it? hahaha.

A few years ago I was asked to be my bestie's bridesmaid, she wasn't bothered with what style of shoes we wore as long as they were black. I picked an awesome pair featured here in one of my first blogs. I decided to 'wear them in', on my bestie's hens cruise, even though my bestie advised against it in case "something happened". Well, let me tell you it did happen, I survived the whole cruise wearing them, and as soon as I stepped off the boat onto the holey wharf, my stiletto went down so far in a crack that it almost broke my ankle and required 3 of us to pull it back out....thankfully I only knocked a little bit of the glitter off the heel, which I repaired with some $2 black nail polish and I was able to wear them all day and night for the wedding.

When has this happened to you? Did you face plant?

3 Pairs for $30 (Including Express Post)!

Thursday 14 March 2013
On Tuesday, during my lunch break I was bored - boredom generally leads to two things;
eating and since I have started my new healthy eating plan that was out of the question,
or
shopping, so I decided to put the call out to all my Facebook likers for their favourite online shoe stores and was keen to spend up!

I need to say thank you to Mandy for suggesting "You are my Sunshine", although I thought initially that Mandy was cracking on to me, I checked out the website. To my surprise it was a website I was familiar with and that is because it was formally known as "Stucey Shoes".

I loved Stucey shoes previously, but they had fallen off my radar and sadly out of my newsfeed, so I missed the memo that they were changing their name to You are my Sunshine.

Needless to say, I was totally excited about rekindling my old flame with a new counterpart in You are my Sunshine. As I trolled through the pages of shoes I was awestruck in how inexpensive the shoes were, how could I forget THIS during the 2 years of seperation between us?!?!

Naturally I purchased 3 pairs of shoes in 10 minutes, check them out below, and the best part they were only $5 each + $15 in total to post and they arrived TODAY - only 2 days after I ordered them.

Also, this shoe purchase got me back in the game, can you believe that I haven't bought any shoes since my trip to Melbourne in January?? Read all about them here.

Do yourself a favour and check out "You are my Sunshine" they definitely are worth a look!

Shrinking feet - Oh my!

Thursday 7 March 2013
At the consultation with my orthopeadic surgeon a few weeks ago I was told that I would be on crutches for 2 weeks after my surgery :( it made me realise that I had to drop some Kgs so I could actually use them - although the thought of making my boyfriend carry me around for 2 weeks did cross my mind and seemed like the easier option hehe. If you haven't read about my ankle injury that requires the operation, here is the link.

So, with the impending doom of 2 weeks on crutches and the pain that goes with it to my my arms, I joined a weightloss gym called Motivating Health on the 22nd February and set myself a goal to lose 10kg before my surgery on the 1st of May. I have been working hard at my new lifestyle plan and it is completely working!! I have lost 3.7kgs in just under 2 weeks hooooooray.

Unfortunately as anyone who has tried to lose weight before knows it ALWAYS comes off the parts of the body that you don't want it to ie breasticles and in my case my feet!

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

This means I could potentially have 100+ pairs of shoes that won't fit me correctly anymore :(
Before you all start cheering about my iminent fire sale. Please recall my previous blog post here about party feet, hopefully they will get me through the initial weightloss and the weight then begins to shift from the places that need it like my butt!!!

Vegan shoes are appetising

Sunday 3 March 2013
You may recall a few months ago, I wrote an entry about some "Pony Hair" shoes I had found in a shop - check it out here. Since then I still feel ill when I think about animals being used in the production of shoes and clothing.

Being a shoe addict, I am constantly referred to (Thanks Facebook) to shoe pages and I came across this one ----> Shoe Envy check it out.

When first opening the page I was greeted by the cutest little sloth ever, I love them, so I knew I was on a winner :D.

Not only are their shoes "vegan" meaning there are no animal based products in them, including the glue, but they also donate a portion of their sales to relevant animal charities! What a great feel good way to buy shoes!

I feel like the below pair of flats might be the perfect pair to get me walking again after my ankle operation in May and the second pair when I am ready to climb the stiletto ladder again - what do you think?

Rain Rain Go Away - I don't have my Gumboot Wedges

Sunday 24 February 2013
Wowzers, It has been a Looooong time since I posted. Apologies if you eagerly check your Facebook news feed everyday to see a post ;-)

So, after checking the long range weather forecast for my area for the next month, there are only 4 days that do not mention rain.Time to get some water friendly shoes with some height!

Around 2 years ago, I picked up the best pair of faux crocskin gumboot wedges from Novo for $20. Everyone who I told about them thought they were ridiculous and that they were not required.
Unfortunately I never wore them due to the spraining of my ankle (which you can read about here), my ankle has been swollen since then, and the gumboot wedges didn't fit :(. I made the very hard decision to on sell them to a friend for $10 (You are welcome Kassandra hehe). And have a look at what I found on the Iconic website - Gumboot wedges for +$170!!!!!
Obviously these are a brand name pair, but with that huge increase in price, I have decided to just purchase these....

www.neatorama.com

Nah, just joking I will stick with my trusty patent leather stilettos and upgrade those if they get ruined in the wet & have some daggy flats in the car for puddles.

How do you ensure your shoes don't get ruined when the heavens open up?

Grace xo

$2 shoes? No way!

Thursday 7 February 2013
Check out my $2 shoes!!!
Cannot believe they were only $2 but the best part was, my bestie saw them, in my size and bought them for me, so they are technically free :D

What do you think? Who knows what these shoes are called? I am going to go with "Cut out, peep toe, ankle boots".

Tell me what is the best shoe bargain you have ever seen?

'Tennis' & 'Fashion' go backHAND in backHand

Wednesday 30 January 2013
Not my image :)
I am a fan of tennis, but do not follow it religiously. However, every year I do tend to watch matches played during the Australian Open.

Honestly, who would have thought that it's 'crisp whites' only that we used to see + the occassional mullet, would turn into the huge rectangle colourful catwalk that it is today?
Not only that, but the fact that it appears to be the men leading in the tennis fashion headlines lately. Awesome!!

One of my favourite tennis players and all around great human being is Roger Federer. Not only is he a remarkable tennis player with a delightful on and off the court presence, the icing on the delicious Swiss cake is his impeccable fashion sense (Yes, I admit it, R Fed crush up in ere!!!!).
Check out his outfit from this year's Australian Open - I really love the dash of fluro pink.

It kind of reminds me of my netburners that I improved by adding pink laces (which I cannot wear for netball anymore, find out why here) So now they are used for playing volleyball and my lunchtime walkies if the temperature is below 25 degrees haha.
Asics Gel Netburners - best netball shoe around!
Lunchtime Walkies

Another reason why I love his outfit - the shoes that started this blog are fluro pink - check out my first post here.

Who was your best dressed for the Australian Open?? Anyone else maybe have a crush on R Fed??
